What Happens at a Free Bathroom Consultation (and How to Prepare)
A step-by-step look at the in-home visit: how to prepare, what we measure and check, the questions worth asking, and what you walk away with.

The Done Fast Bath Team
Philadelphia Suburbs

A lot of homeowners put off calling about a new shower because they're not sure what the consultation involves. Will it take all afternoon? Will someone pressure you to sign on the spot? Do you need to know what you want before anyone shows up?
This guide answers all of that. Here's exactly what happens at a Done Fast Bath free in-home consultation, how to get the most out of it, and what you'll have when it's over.
Why the Consultation Happens in Your Home
You can't price a shower accurately from a photo. Measurements, the condition of the walls and floor, the doorway width and even the path from your front door all affect what fits and how the install goes. Seeing samples in your own bathroom's light also matters. A wall color that looks warm in a showroom can look very different under your bathroom fixture.
Before the Visit: How to Prepare
You don't need to have anything figured out, but a few things make the visit more productive:
Clear the area around the tub or shower so we can measure and see the walls and base.
Make a short list of what bothers you about the current bathroom: the step, the grout, leaks, storage, the look.
Gather inspiration if you have it: photos, screenshots or a magazine page.
Include the decision-makers. If more than one person will decide, try to have everyone there.
If the shower is for a parent, have them there too. We'll want to see how they move.
Note any history: past leaks, ceiling stains below, previous repairs.
Step 1: Talking About How You Use the Bathroom
We start with a conversation, not a sales pitch. Who uses this bathroom? Does anyone take baths? Is anyone dealing with mobility issues? How long do you plan to stay in the home? Your answers shape everything that follows, including whether a tub-to-shower conversion, a shower replacement or a new tub fits best.
Step 2: Measuring and Inspecting
Next, we measure:
The tub or shower alcove: length, width and height.
The doorway and hallway, to make sure materials can get in.
The valve and drain locations.
Clearance in front of the shower for a door.
We also look for things that could affect the install: soft spots in the floor, loose tile, signs of leaks, the condition of the caulk and the age of the fixtures. If we see something concerning, we'll tell you. See signs your shower is leaking behind the wall for what we look for.
Step 3: Choosing Your Options With Real Samples
This is the fun part. We bring real samples so you can see and touch them in your bathroom:
Wall styles like subway, marble-look and solid colors. See wall styles and patterns.
Base options, including low-entry and slip-resistant finishes. See shower bases.
Fixture finishes like chrome, brushed nickel and matte black. See fixtures and finishes.
Doors, from sliding glass to curtains. See shower doors.
Add-ons like seats, grab bars, niches, flooring, a vanity or a new toilet.
Step 4: Your Written Price
Before we leave, you get one clear written price for the project we talked about. It spells out what's included: removal of the old fixtures, the base or tub, walls, fixtures, door and any add-ons. If you'd like to compare two options, such as a conversion versus keeping the tub, we can price both.
If you're interested in financing, we'll explain the options available through our lending partners, subject to approval. Our article on bathroom remodel financing covers the basics.
Questions Worth Asking at Any Bathroom Consultation
What exactly is included in the price?
What happens if you find damage behind the old shower?
How long will the install take in my home?
How long between signing and install day?
What warranty comes with the work and the products?
Who will be doing the installation?
How should I care for the new shower?
What We Won't Do
We won't pressure you to sign that day. Take time to think, talk it over and ask follow-up questions. The price is in writing so you can compare it calmly.
After You Say Yes
Your system is made to the measurements we took. We schedule your install as soon as the materials arrive, and confirm the date with you. On install day, most standard installs are done in about a day on site. For the full timeline, read how long a tub-to-shower conversion takes.
How to Compare Quotes Fairly
If you're getting more than one quote, make sure you're comparing the same project. Line them up side by side and check:
Scope: Does each quote include removal and haul-away of the old fixtures?
Materials: Same type of base, walls and fixtures?
Add-ons: Are seats, bars, doors and storage included or extra?
Damage policy: What happens if there's damage behind the old shower?
Timeline: How long will the crew be in your home?
Warranty: What's covered, for how long, and by whom?
A lower number that leaves out removal, the door or the fixtures isn't really lower. Ask each company to put everything in writing.
